Expanding Your Network Online

Let’s talk about bubbles. Not the kind you blow in the air, but the ones we live in—online and in real life.

From the moment we step into the world, we naturally gravitate toward groups. Think about high school: cliques, friend circles, shared interests. We see it in the professional world too. At SXSW, I witnessed three distinct bubbles—film, technology, and music—coming together for one event. Each of these groups has its own culture, inside jokes, and ways of seeing the world. And when they mix? That’s where innovation happens.

Yet most people stayed within their tribes. Why? Because mixing bubbles takes effort.

And effort pays off.

The Formula for Breaking Out of Your Bubble

There’s a misconception that only the extroverted and charismatic thrive in networking. That’s false. Here’s the truth:

  1. A handshake gets you further than you think. People respect confidence, even in small doses.

  2. Preparation is the real secret weapon. Enter a conversation already knowing something relevant.

  3. If you can’t do it in person, do it online. But do it strategically.

How to Train the Algorithm to Work for You

Most people let social media control them. They scroll mindlessly, consuming whatever the algorithm feeds them. Don’t be like most people.

Instead, hack the system.

I create multiple accounts, each dedicated to a specific industry:

  • One for AI

  • One for real estate

  • One for fashion

  • One for celebrity gossip (yes, even that has value)

Each account follows only the top minds in that space. When I open Instagram, I’m not being spoon-fed distractions—I’m getting an immersive crash course in a new industry.

And here’s the beauty of it: The algorithm learns from you. The more you engage with quality content, the more quality content it feeds you. You train your digital environment to be your personal research assistant.

The Secret of Fandoms (And Why It Matters to You)

A fascinating case study? One Direction fans.

Learn More TimeStamp (01:17:40 Fan Aesthetics)

New fans are instantly identifiable based on what memes they reference. Why? Because the algorithm feeds them history first—they consume old jokes before they ever get to the new ones.

This is how all online communities work. You start at the surface. The more you engage, the deeper you go. Until one day, you’re an insider.

This works in real estate, tech, finance, music—every industry.

What This Means for You

We’re in a time where loneliness is a real issue, yet we have more tools than ever to connect. The trick is using them strategically—to cultivate real conversations, bridge online and in-person interactions, and expand our perspectives.

If you feel like community doesn’t exist the way it used to, ask yourself:

  • Am I actively seeking out new conversations?

  • Am I curating my digital experience to serve my growth?

  • Am I using technology to work for me, not against me?

Because at the end of the day, you choose your bubble. Breaking out is a choice.

So here’s my challenge to you:

  • This week, engage with a new industry. Online or in-person.

  • Ask better questions. Approach a conversation with real curiosity.

  • Use technology as a tool, not a distraction.

The internet is not your enemy. It’s an opportunity. But it’s up to you to use it.

Let's chat again soon...
